Population: 2,513,670

Summary:

Standing as the largest Seyaran island that exists, Seyaria serves as almost a central point of the known plane. This island is made up of one large island and many smaller islands around it. The land is known to be extremely fertile and with plenty of it, this country sized island produces the majority of the food of the known species. Lush rolling hills with abundant waterways dot the landscape as you move away from the urbanized centers. With very little in way of mountains, the land serves as almost completely usable for farming.

An oddity of the mainland of Seyaria, the island has many rivers that end over the edge of the land mass, creating large cascading falls into the storm below. Despite this, the land has not dried up or ran out of water since its founding and shows no sign of running out. This has become a tourist attraction for other species, going on cruises that travel around some of the more spectacular falls and even some that have you ride off of them using glider-boats onto the ship. However, in the early years when they were unsure if the water would last, several rivers were shuttered off with large dams. Over the course of time, these rivers would route around the dams and continue their travel off the edge.

The capital city is a Monarchy. While the proper terms for the royalty are King and Queen, they mostly are referred to as Grand Protector. This role is regulated by a number of branches underneath them, which the people elect, that provide balances to prevent any absolute ruler. For the most part, the position of Grand Protector is mostly just for the name, but the role they serve to the people is to direct, calm, and assist the people. Should there be no heir to the throne, the replacement is required to be from the military or be of military training, come from Seyaria, and be well educated. While the position is for life, many retire before passing, handing over the reins to their heir. However, being the Heir does not mean absolute that you will lead, and should they prove to be an incapable leader, they can be renounced of royalty and a new King or Queen is appointed by the elected officials.

The other branches of government include the Generals, High Justices, Commons, and Treasury. The Generals command the military and police forces, but cannot go to war without the People voting on it in the Commons. Nor can they fund themselves without the Treasury. The High Justices dictate the laws the other branches set forth and if they feel they should or shouldn’t be laws, but they cannot enforce them or fund the enforcement of them. The Commons can supercede that by turning the unlawful act into law (which has never occurred to modern date). The Commons make the law, but the Generals don’t have to enforce it. The Treasury can deny funding, but can be overturned by the other three overruling. The Grand Protector falls into the Generals side of the government.

History:

The Seyarans were not the first people to inhabit the island, but by the time the Seyarans discovered the island, there were no indigenous people. It was believed to once have been a major capital to a former empire. However, much of the early discovered ruins had been destroyed to make way for farms, cities, and towns. When Seyarans first discovered the land, the view was described as “Quiet cities nestled into the rolling plains, fallen apart in time to create monoliths of art. The people gone, but their footprint remained” by the early poet Jano and translated.

Much of the settling of the land came with ease. The land was fertile and seemed to reward the tilling and plowing of fields with bountiful harvest. Still, the open land provided little protection against the Chill, leading to the first settlement to expire. However, the survivors moved further away into a forested area in the North. This would later develop into the major city Seyaria. As the first Chill was mustered through, more Seyarans searching for a new home came to inhabit the island.

For many years after that, there existed no central government. Instead, mayors represented towns and traveled to local towns, trading goods for the people or making deals with towns. These Mayors eventually went away from the idea of merchants as towns began to grow, requiring more people to transport goods, especially with the growing popularity of banditry. Once they were no longer the town merchant, Mayors became publicly accepted individuals who felt they could do the job. The terms served were for life or until retired. Most would end up retiring after about twenty years.

As alliances between towns were formed, kingdoms began to grow out of them. This has led to a number of aged and abandoned castles that dot the landscape in modern day. These kings were just nobles that held much of the power in the region, either with land or goods. They could afford to pay a militia and to protect their interest in the towns. But as allegiances formed, many nobles declared allegiance with a more powerful kingdom until a nation began to form. Combat between the budding nations did happen, struggling with who and how should one rule. However, none were able to compete with Seyaria. It had stayed out of must of the conflicts, happy with what they already had. They did not waste expenses on active war. They had begun trade with Chur and had access to items the others didn’t.

However, what was known as the Kingdom of Amalara declared war upon Seyaria. Its opposition the kingdom of Tarun likewise declared war on Seyaria, not wanting to let Amalara get all the benefits of defeating the mostly peaceful nation. These nations felt the war would end quickly and they would have new resources. Despite the war on two fronts, neither side managed to gain even a mile into Seyaran territory, discovering that Seyaria had begun developing new technology and tech in their time of peace. Tanks, airships, and massive spells manipulating energy allowed them to tear through the encroaching armies with a quarter of the people the other nations were fielding.

Amalara surrendered first. But Tarun continued to fight and lose until its capital was taken. The king of Tarun was kept oblivious of the state of the war by his military, surrendering once he knew. However, before his surrender could be presented to the officials of Seyaria, his generals assassinated him. Ruins of this eastern Kingdom are most notable of ruins of old towns, taken by Seyaria through might until there was nowhere left for the generals to hide. Amalara would eventually be absorbed into Seyaria years after the end of the war, forming into one nation rule.

Never once has Seyaria initiated a fight, instead defending themselves or allies, such as the defense against the Kol’ok invasion of Chur. A focus on industrialization drove them to develop a number of technologies and magic that many other islands adopted. The Monarchy of Seyaria also would divide into having a Hundreds’ Table to serve as an elected body of people to help represent the people to the King or Queen.

Major Features:

The Grand Bazaar
A magical market unlike most other cities, the Grand Bazaar sports its magical ability not only in the wares they sell but into the shops themselves. Some stalls are mere doors that open into alternate spaces where a large shop rests. Others spout magical decorations that steam in varied colors. Each shop is always a little different than the rest even if they bear similarities. The goal is to attract customers, for they know that while their customer base is small, that people come from all over the plane to buy from them.

League of Adventure
A large guild of people who seek to uncover the mysteries of the world and stop others from taking the powers unknown and destroying the peace of the islands. It would be best to call them a vigilante group of mages, soldiers, and scholars. Explorers who may be out to get fame and glory, but in their effort help the world. Of course, that is the ideal spouted on the fliers, and the organization, led by Zivara the Explorer, isn’t always so perfect. It has become so large that many that join don’t always agree with the good ideals set out, but are willing to accept someone’s coin and do it anyways.

Aruun College of Magic
Founded by the Grand Mage Aruun, the college of Magic is a place for anyone who seeks knowledge. Aruun was thought to be a master of all magical arts before he passed away, though he was cryptic in his teachings. Despite that, all were welcome to train under him as an apprentice and he taught those apprentices to do the same, spreading the knowledge. While his goal is still achieved to this day, it is no longer necessarily free, requiring costs to keep the school going. But access to the library is always free; only the classes cost money.

Shrine of the Harvest Wolf
A wicker shrine stands in perpetual state of burning to the South-East of Seyaria. It has stood there for hundreds of years in remembrance of the Harvest Wolf. She was considered the patron spirit of the people of the island. While the great Mother Wolf has not been seen in some time, the shrine is constantly fed more wicker from old baskets or excess that couldn’t be sold. During the month of Harvest, named after the Wolf and the act of harvesting, the people will gather either at this shrine in respect or build a similar shrine at their home and burn it.
