Description:

The mortal immortal as some say. The Rane remind people of divine creatures known as angels. The species is, in truth, a type of beastmen, but due to the appearances mimicking that of angels, people tend to disassociate the two groups. Instead, they are an avian people with large wings. Not all are born with the ability to fly, but all have wings. They have hooked noses, narrow eyes, large wings, and ears tufted like an owl and feathery. Their bones are light, letting most fly, but it also means they weigh a lot less than another person of their size.

For the genders, Rane have both. Depending on their heritage, some of their kind appear more like another species, gaining features such as Lu’ryn longer ears, animal features from a beastman, or so on. Because of this, they tend to inherit some vestigial secondary sexual characteristics of other species, but otherwise most true-blooded (a haughty word used by such Rane) look quite alike with flat featureless chests like a child’s doll. But in cases where a Rane may have had a Seyaran great ancestor that is too many greats to count on one hand, they still carry that vestigial information. As such, many Rane now bear such characteristics to make it a part of their genetics.

Childbirth for Rane is done via egg and external child development. The egg takes about a month to fully develop before the child will break itself out of the shell. To break out of the shell, the hatchling will use a bony plate on their forehead that looks much akin to a horn. This feature vanishes as they mature. Unlike birds, Rane still care for their children for far longer, carrying them into adulthood and not just kicking them out of the nest to learn to fly. To reach physical maturity, Rane need sixteen years of development.

Culture:

The Rane’s home island was one of high peaks and large cliffs, allowing their flight to help benefit them greatly. While some could not fly, they would settle the base of the hills. These two would eventually meet and begin trading the goods that each lifestyle had in plenty. The ones able to fly would jump to the nearby smaller islands to get less harvested food to bring to markets. While those who couldn’t would grow what couldn’t be found or hunted. A nomadic and settled lifestyle mingling together to cover what the one lifestyle lacked.

It was here that they were found by a group of Seyarans. These humans were part of a fanatical religious group that believed in a land which was granted to them by a divine creature. In that prophecy, angelic creatures were described of similar description. It was said that they would serve the Seyarans. So, quickly these settlers took to the island, proclaiming themselves their masters and culling any who did not follow their commands. Letters were sent back to the city of their discovery and declare their belief system the true one. This rumor got distorted and spread that the species they found were angels, something many beliefs had in common, and that has yet to be shaken from the Rane’s image.

Eventually the Rane did kill all of those settlers and when it was realized what was happening, dignitaries from Seyaria came to not only apologize, but offer large gifts. It was a tense period of time, with war looming for quite some time before they agreed to a tentative peace that promised a lot of protections for their home island. As such, the natural culture is still mostly preserved, but with better technology and knowledge of the world. This event has made the people wary and distrustful of strangers. And secrets are not liked.

However, it doesn’t end there for the Rane. Because of the widespread rumor that they are angelic creatures, many expect them to be perfect creatures and filled with kindness. When met with the real thing, many react negatively, belittling the people for being improper and a disgrace to angels. Of course, this concept is born of them and not the Rane, making it so they prefer to avoid dealings with people who call them Angels.

Adaptations:

Many Rane have wings that are not only large, but are actually capable of flight. These wings are on their back and not arms.

Other Info:

  • The history of the Rane is a mystery to even them. The island they call home likely wasn’t their origin island as there are stories in their language of coming to this land after some kind of event occurred. Much of the old language is gone, making understanding it impossible.

  • While they can eat meat, a Rane doesn’t get any extra nutritional value over eating a vegetarian diet.
