Madoria

Government: Anarchy

Leader: None/Council of Ships

Capital: Po’ko

Population: Unknown

Summary:

A town of lawless individuals that feel they should live as they want to can be found here. Of course, if you lack strength, you may find yourself better off elsewhere. Madoria favors the strong of wills and muscled. Intelligence is one of the more valued aspects, but you can’t just be smart. If you want power, you need connections, strength, confidence, and intelligence to make plans come through. You can lack some aspects, but never confidence and intelligence to make it big here. Otherwise, living in Madoria isn’t as exciting as books make it out to be. Most of the common folk just want to live without worrying about the things set by the other governments. There is only one law in Madoria, don’t start a fight unless you want to end up dead. The people value their peace, and they don’t appreciate sore losers, violent drunks, and nosy investigators.

Beyond the people, Madoria is a rather peculiar island. Rather than the standard floating piece of land, it angles itself at about a forty-five degree angle, and a series of large caverns riddle the sides and lead to a hollow center. However, about half of the caverns lead to dead ends with paths too narrow to turn back, intended to crash unwelcome ships.

History:

The name Madoria is infamously known through the plane not because of the Island, but the famed pirate Madoria Black, captain of the Red Sail. Madoria stole many things in her lifetime but none so valuable as original Seyaran Crown which still rests upon her corpse to this day. The island was the place her crew called home when they weren’t traversing the skyways in hunt of prey. As she gained notoriety, more and more people flocked to join her crew and settlement. The people declared her Queen and she beat them up. She didn’t want to be a queen.

She decreed that the Island would have no rulers and anyone who tried to lead the island would be killed and their supporters ousted. However, Madoria would not live forever. She set to building an infrastructure, guiding the growth of the island as they mined away to make room. She kept this up until the ripe old age of ninety-four years old when she didn’t show up several days and her corpse was found, resting at the helm of her ship which had since been decommissioned after being mostly destroyed. Her death was one thousand and thirteen years ago.

Five years after her death, the miners dug into a series of strange ruins. Attempts to raid it for anything of value quickly faded as giant murderous beasts began to appear and slaughter anyone within, stopping as soon as the ruins were left alone. Morale was low in this time period. Their icon dead, their efforts to expand crushed, and soon after, the Seyaran fleet came knocking. Thirty years passed with little word escaping about Madoria’s death, but once the leaders of Seyaria found out, their fleet surrounded the island, demanding return of the crown. Panic began to settle into the normally semi-peaceful days of Madoria.

As the denizens humored the idea of returning the crown, a young boy of only thirteen years of age called out to the once scourge of the skies. The exact speech has been lost as not many pirates were literate. The speech passed down spoke of words that ignited a fire and reminded them of their iconic Madoria though, at that time, the boy looked far older than his age. He took his father’s ship and led a charge against the Seyaran blockade. Legends speak of how Madoria stood behind the boy, guiding him as his ship alone tore through nearly half the blockade.

The rest of the fleet retreated or limped back to Seyaria, humiliated. The boy was a half-blood of Lu’ryn and Seyaran mix and named Po’ko. Of course, this soft sounding name was not fit for a captain, and the citizens renamed him Captain Dagger Ears. He lived till he was five hundred and eighty-seven years old, continuing the traditions of Madoria in not taking up a title of king. Since then, Madoria has been left alone though trade lines have upped their security.

Major Features:

Corbyn Lair
A series of strange ruins dot the northern point of Madoria where the people fear to tread. This set of ruins was uncovered in a means to expand, but quickly abandoned when those searching the ruins were slaughtered by some kind of giant creature with claws the length of a seyaran’s torso. The creature was given the name Corbyn and the ruins sealed. Sometimes children approach and dare each other to touch the ruins. Though in some cases, they enter and are never seen again.

Madoria’s Rest
The final resting spot of the Red Sail after it sustained too much damage to repair. The main mast, crew quarters, bow, and hold were completely destroyed. It was a miracle the ship even made it back to the island where it crashed and settled as its final place of rest. A single skeleton rests upon the Ship’s wheel wearing a crown of royalty. The remains of Madoria Black. This is almost considered a holy place as some pirates go there for Madoria’s blessing before a haul.

Shipwreck Cove
The most famous of dead end coves on the edge of the island. However, unlike others, this one is an actual entrance, but requires piloting the ship nearly sideways about halfway through and making a ninety degree turn. As such, this entrance is used when avoiding a chasing ship and often to the demise of both.
