Description:

A subspecies of Rane that broke away early in the written history of the Rane. Originally described as a tribe of misfits within the writings. These were Rane who had been born with ‘issues’ or a common genetic deviation during early Rane development that led to mutations such as wings in place of their arms, dense feather coverage, talon like-feet, and bird-like legs. Many have problems with other languages due to misshapen voice boxes which can make their words oscillate with a rough tone similar to screeching or grinding nails on a chalkboard. With practice, they can overcome this, but some are lucky and do not suffer the difficulty.

They are otherwise very similar in way to Rane. They have both male and females of the species. They are just as sexually dimorphic as the Rane. Most tend to bear Seyaran features as it was this intermingling of species that caused the genetic acceleration that distorted much of the Rane into the Mar.

Culture:

Due to the mistreatment from other Rane, it is of no surprise these scorned took to be by themselves, forming their own people under the name of Mar (Exiled) which sounded and looked similar to a myth from Seyaria of bird women who would drag men and children off the island and drop them into the storm. Humorously, this myth came from early interaction with the Rane and became skewed over time. Thus came the name, from that myth, of the Harpy. Having somehow thrived despite their different forms, the modern Chur government has offered to allow them access to the rest of the islands again. They have yet to truly make amends for their exiling of the species, but efforts have been made.

Because of this, Harpies often are distrustful of others, trusting their own. They speak Churel, but with minor cultural differences. Seyarans are the most critical of Harpies, though males tend to receive curious glances because the myths never had males of the species. Despite this still, the Harpy people are still very Matriarchal, with most households being focused around the mother. This is primarily due to the fact that males were away hunting most of the time, so the woman had to ensure the household and children were cared for which were considered the more important roles.

Adaptations:

Harpies have stronger wings than the Rane due to the reliance of them in their exiled home. Their feet have a thumb-like appendage that allows easy manipulation of objects even while flying.

Other Info:

  • Before exiling the Harpies, the Rane considered a number of other solutions to the issue. Most were horrific, leading them ultimately to their decision to exile.
